Listen up boyz and girlz... I'm going to regal you with words of wisdom...
OK. I'm like minding my own business, reading people's blogs and such. One of the blogs has me look at a You Tube video. Then, out of curiosity, I follow some links to other people's blogs. Ya know how it goes. I click on somebody's My Web Page link in their profile, and my browser is redirected to an IP address (web site without a name, just numbers, like 88.124.32.222. Next thing you know, the alarms on my oh so secure computer are going off, saying I'm downloading a "Downloader", which stopped it cold in its tracks. I force shut down my browser and got rid of the sucker by deleting all of my temporary internet files. Then, being the brave soul that I am, I went back through the same process and tried to find that sucka virus again. I had no luck. This has led me to the following conclusions. You geek types out there feel free to poke holes in this.
1. The virus was already on my machine (not likely, since Norton caught it).
2. The virus was embedded in the You Tube video.
3. The virus was embedded in the URL of the web page, but I couldn't find it.
4. The virus was written into the blogger's web page withouth them knowing it (still couldn't reproduce it).
5. Finally, and very scary, the browser was redirected by having the HTTP packets intercepted over the internet.
Now, I am concerned enough about this to make sure all of my anti-virus software is up to date. I think it would be wise of each of you to do the same. Or, if you are a techno geek like me, switch to Linux :-O It would be a good idea, if your computer acts like it freezes up, and it says waiting on http://23.232.122.2 or something similar, to kill that sucker.
Here's some more useful advice for you. When you are on an unfamiliar treadmill, and running a program for the first time, don't distract yourself by trying to scratch the unreachable places on your back. You might get caught by surprise and thrown off the machine. You're welcome.
Finally, for the first time ever, I cooked a delicious meal last night without cracking the recipe book open one time. Brilliant!!
I joined Paul's "Streaking Challenge" and started my streak off with a 31 minute run, no walk breaks on the treadmill. Welcome to 2008.

I'm sorry, but I'm just on the floor laughing at the thought of being ejected off the treadmill... thanks for making me smile! :)
Glad you seem to have stopped the virus in its tracks.
Nice job on the cooking, too. Once you get the basics down, improvising becomes much easier - and some of the best meals come from those improvisations!
Careful on that treadmill! Eek!
scary, but thanks for the warning. what did you cook?
Dang I wish I could poke some holes. But I'm not smart enough to be a "geek type" LOL
There's this story that gets passed around the gym where I worked about this guy who was playing air drums on the treadmill to the music on his iPod...lost his balance, legs went flying out behind him, but he's still hanging out with his hands, so then he puts his knees on the belt to stablize himself, of course that just cuts his knees up more (meanwhile everyone is secretly thinking, just let go dude, just let go)...he finally does and goes crashing into the stationary bikes behind him
Thanks for the info Wes. And yeah, be careful on the treadmill! I've seen people go flying off the back end - it's hard not to laugh!
Oh my! Computer viruses suck!
Gosh Wes, I hope it wasn't my you tube that started all of that. DH has our computer on total lock down but that sounds awfully scary!!
watch those pesky viruses...glad u got it early I have had my share of them...thanks for the tips.
Ewww. Thanks for the advice.
I hope you are not sharing the treadmill advice from a recent experience... ouch!
I think its 2 or 3 from how you described it.
Viruses embedded in the video have happened. See this.
But still you should have caught it when you went back.
I'm loving my dual boot with Ubuntu!
LMAO at the treadmill warning. Especially the "you're welcome." I think I am laughing so hard in part because I can picture it happening to me. Yikes!
I thought flying off the back of a treadmill was one of those "urban legend" stories, but to actually do it whilst grabbing an "unreachable." Priceless!
I'm sorry you lost me on "download".
Yeah for you for signing up for the challenge. Wes Madonna. . .bwhahahaha--"like a virgin, ironman for the very first time, like a virgiiinnn . . ."
OMG, can I be any funnier?
The fact that you even know what any of that techy mumbo jumbo means impresses me.
Ahh...the fun treadmill! Once my husband and I were at the gym and he was running on the treadmill in front of me (I was on a stationary bike). He dropped his water bottle and kicked it from behind and it came flying at me. Good times.
Thanks for passing along the streakin' challenge from Paul - great idea!
We instantly got a virus when we hooked our computer back up (after it hadn't been connected to the internet for 5 months). We had Norton, but Geek Squad said Norton was one of the worst anti-virus programs around.... thoughts?
Thanks for the virus warning. My husband wants to switch to Linux. I just may consider it more.
And, thanks for the treadmill warning. Sorry, but we can laugh about it now, right? Seriously, that's one of my gym fears.
Taryn:
I've actually found that Norton is one of the best anti virus softwares around. My guess is the Geek Squad would love to install Trend Micro's virus program because that is what they sell in the store.
Lady Runner:
The treadmill is fine. Its a good tool. You just have to kinda know when the program is going to speed up and slow down. This one didn't beep at me or anything. Just flash and go. Of course, I wasn't looking :-)
I'm still dealing wth previous virus issues -- someone is coming today to fix it.
CRAP!! That just happened to me at work yesterday. I really need to stay off it during work hours... now I really have a good reason.
Thanks for informing us all!!
Love it when a good meal comes together!!! Whatcha cooking up next Wes and what time is dinner. Add four to the table....LOL!!... no really.. add four :)
Wes, I had no idea you were doing the Ridges 5K race! I found it on the internet last week and have been intrigued ever since. How fun that you will be there too!
And, I thought you were doing the 70.3 race and not the whole IM FLA. Holy cow. You are a tough nut, my friend. I don't think my knees would do it in 2009, much less 2008. It's really a function of time. With my job and the young kiddos, I can't devote the time in the next 2 years. Thereafter, I'll just have to chase you. ; )
