The Final Detox

It's funny. You would think after nearly 17 months of training, I would have run in the rain more than four times, but I haven't. What's even funnier is that two of them were during races. The first time was when I became a 10Ker at the Awesome Alpharetta 10K. The second time was on a cold wet day back in January of this year. The third was at the recent Atlanta Half Marathon, and the final time was yesterday.

I stepped outside the door in a long sleeve tech shirt with a short sleeve underneath, only to be greeted by the welcome drizzle of more rain. I quickly changed into my banana yellow Nike rain jacket and headed out for my run. Despite several attempts at sabotage, I had a good run. I negative split the 10 miles with 10:08 average over-all pace. Sabotage you say? Yea... Sabotage. I allowed myself the luxury of two six packs of beer over the holidays. I just love Sam Adam's Cherry Wheat, and the Honey Brown ain't too shabby either. Then the Dee Dee meister ran over my heel with a shopping cart Saturday, and halfway into the run, I was feeling it!

Dee Dee was a bit worried after my run, as I was limping around rather pathetically. I assured her the damage was only temporary, and I would back to my normal blisteringly fast pace again soon. I was pleasantly surprised when I jumped on the scale to see that I had LOST the extra five pounds of padding I had put on, prior to my doctor's visit. Now, ain't that special! No holiday glutinous damage to my mid-section.

So, yea. Detox. Off the beer wagon until after the marathon. My acid reflux sensitive throat is complaining too, and I don't blame it. I'm going to give the no coffee thing a try again for a while as well and see if that doesn't help.

The shuttle is on its way to the launch pad... Less than two weeks and counting.

Wes

ORN: 10 miles, 01:41:20, normal pace, R4/W1, 10:08 mmp

Give up beer? E gads, man, you are serious. :D Good luck with that!!

I had some (or several) nice pumpkin ale rimmed with cinammon and sugar.

Now, if you lived up here, it'd be more like 4 times in 17 months that you hadn't run in rain. ;-)

detox sounds scary! but you can do it!

5lbs is AWESOME Wes!!! Dannnggg, even after Thanksgiving too? You rock!

I won't even comment on the coffee thing. That's like messing with holiness right there LOL

Best of luck with the Detox. It is never easy and hardest on the ones who live with us most of all.

Get the rubber room ready my friend!! you can do it.

Good luck with the weaning yourself off of coffee bit. It is no mystery what I think about caffeine; the stuff is way worse than alcohol or tobacco.

You'll be better off for it once you get past the withdrawal symptoms. Good luck!

Ugh, beer and caffeine in one fell swoop? You are a stronger man than I could ever pretend to be :X Awesome job on the half, too! Too bad you and Dee Dee can't come run the RnR in Arizona!

What Lori said. ;>) I never heard why you can't come....

You can do it!! Be strong!

How do you do it! You have great time with your runs, and you are walking! About how fast are you running during those 4 minutes? I can't get myself to be consistent and then I poop myself out! :)

The Sam Adams rocks.. I love the winter brew. Save you one for after Rocket City. Giving up beer is not so bad.. but coffee.. no way!

Well done overcoming the sabotage, AND on the lard-shedding. Getting excited yet?

My girlfriend swears by beer diet: when she needs to drop a few pounds, she drinks 3 beers at night without food and by morning - 5 lbs lighter! Must be all the visits to the bathroom:) Good job!

You've only run in the rain three times? And you wear a jacket when it rains? Oh, my, you've got life easy. I hardly ever where my jacket for rain - it has to be really, really cold for that to happen. I'll overheat otherwise - I'm usually in a vest, or sometimes (like summer) just a shirt. I just get wet, nothing else to do. A hat is a must though.

Keep the good stuff going on the way to marathon day - you'll be great!

Good luck with the detox : ) I've become much more of a wine drinker, but I love a Pete's Wicked Ale now and then. Mmmmm......

What? Only 4 runs in the rain? I can't even count the times I've run in the rain! Of course, I do live in a slightly wetter area than you. :) Tell me about this rain jacket you have. I'm having a terrible time finding a waterproof jacket lately. You'd think there'd be an abundance over here.

Good luck on your detox!

wow, five pounds lost AFTER thanksgiving. that's awesome!

Good luck with the detox. I have no doubt you'll do it well.

I find nothing odd about only running in the rain 4 times in 17 months. I don't run in the rain... not if I can get around it. I equate rain with being cold and cold and wet just isn't fun. No rain for me. :)

Good luck with the detox!

Do watch out for the heel thing, Wes...only 11 days to go now.

Yeah, and watch the weight too!!

So will 4 six packs help me get rid of the extra 10 pounds I've picked up lately. If you think so I'm willing to give it a try.

4 rainy runs.... that must mean you don't get to run in the mud much... you are so missing out ;o)

Great job on the 10miler!!

A little drizzle is fun but an Oregon downpour is not. :D

Great job on the run & the 5lbs.

I know you said a lot in that post - but I caught 2 things FAST - no coffee, no barley. What's wrong with that picture? I mean - I could understand giving up one for (something- I don't know what), I suppose, but both.

That's crazy!

Isn't running in the rain exhilaratingly? and think about all the crazies that drive by and say "that man is crazy". Yeah, I like that!
