I've been watching and waiting for this day to come for some time now. After the run leg of my triathlon Sunday, my mileage for the year is officially double that of the previous year. In addition, my cycling mileage went over 1000 miles. I'm excited about that. I'm also excited to see how high I can set the bar this year for next year, because surely, these milestones are written in sand, and they will be swept away as I grow and progress. Fun stuff :-)
My Michelin Pro2 Race tires came in the mail yesterday. After doing a few things around the house, I set out to change my tires. Well, these floppy, flimsy tires are much harder to get on than my Bontrager Selects. It took me almost 20 minutes to change both tires. Then, after that, I took Aerowyn out for a spin to give'em a test drive. The problem is still there!
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!
Just damn! Now what? At this point, I'm relatively sure that the rim is not bent. I checked it out carefully. Therefore, it has to be the stinkin tube. I think I am just going to take it to the LBS and let them fix it for me. Dee Dee said having new tires was fine. I would need them for half ironman training. I, on the other hand, am not happy that I spent seventy-one dollars I didn't need to spend. Did I mention that I bought those tires off of eBay? Saved myself forty bucks :-)
My plan called for six easy miles yesterday. I took this opportunity to try out something new. I replaced the insoles of my Mizuno Wave Inspire 3(s) with sports gel inserts. Oooohh Yeaaaa! Despite the lingering affects of cramping in my right calf and hamstring (from the tri), the run was awesome. At some points, it felt effortless. The hills were easy. I think the insoles are a keeper. As a matter of fact, I'm going to buy some more and pump an extra 200 miles of life into my Adrenaline GTS 6(s).
Now, the question of the day. What to do about the 16 miler I skipped. Do it Sunday? Or skip it, stick with the plan (5 miles), and go straight to eighteen next week? Lay your wisdom on me marathoners!
Happy hump day, y'all!
Wes

I had a flat on Monday. It was my tube. I took it to Roswell bikes and they changed it, replaced tube and oiled gears and checked my brakes --only was $11. Since I have no idea how to do any of the above it was $11 well spent. Unfortunately I have not gotten to ride it yet . . .
As far as the 16 miler--what is your longest run this training cycle? Have you done a 16 miler yet? I personally wouldn't skip it. I would drop one of the other runs or speed works out in favor of keeping/making up the long run. I think it is very doable to do long runs 4 or 5 days apart--not on a regular basis but occasionally. You just have to compensate in your training elsewhere. I think the long run is the most important component of marathon training so I do place a lot of emphasis on that. And I think you will risk over injury and have a miserable run if you make a big leap to 18 next week--unless you have run a 15/16 miler recently. Weather tomorrow and the through the weekend looks perfect for a long run. . . .
My longest run to date is 14 miles... My main concern is I have long runs of 5, 18, 20, and 16 on tap the next four weeks. If I do the 16 this weekend, then I have 16, 18, 20, and 16. I wonder if that would be too much???
Rats on the bike tire!! Sucks when you spend money to correct a problem only to find it still there!!
As for the missed 16 miler... I would skip it and continue with your plan as it is. You still have plenty of long runs and trying to play catch up may not be the best idea. Keep moving forward I say!!
That stinks that the new tires didn't fix the problem. I am with DeeDee though and would be fine with having the tires. You got a good deal on them and are going to need them anyway. Hopefully the LBS can figure out the problem with your bike.
I'm no help at all when it comes to missing runs, but I think Robin has a point. It looks like your next month is chock full of long runs.
Stinky on the bike tires, but you're wife is all knowing (as are all wives :P). .if you were going to need them anyway and got a good deal then it's all good ;D
I won't comment on the running because I never have any idea what I'm talking about there LOL
You've run 14 miles already, so I would skip the 16 miler altogether and go straight to 18. If you had only run a top of 12 or so, then I'd say replace the 18 with 16 or 17, but I think you'll be fine.
That being said, I wouldn't make a habit of it; if you miss another long run, then you'll need to seriously rethink where in the program you are and make adjustments going forward.
One workout missed, even a key workout, is not going to mess you up too much as long as you don't go screwing around with everything else as a result.
Wes,
Just catching up from the weekend - congrats on your comeback tri! I bet it feels great after the last one. And a big congrats on the double mileage marker!
Ugh, sorry about the tire problem. I vote for skipping the long run you missed. It will be harder to try to work it in somewhere and you may end up too fatigued.
Sorry about your tire. Inserts sound awesome, I may have to check those out.
I say that when you miss a long run it's best to just skip it, follow your schedule like normal and focus on the next long run. But what do I know? Not a lot.
So you did 14 last weekend? I'd go somewhere in between so that you get a bit of a rest but still keep up a good base. You'll be ok!
Congrats on progressing to 1000 miles. That sounds very impressive to me!
Hmm, okay you did a 14. Skipping the 16 wouldn't be totally terrible but I still think you can squeeze it in--but, then again, I may not be the best person to ask because I have been known to do a 18 miler and then a few days later do a 20. I am of the mindset the more long runs the better--even if they aren't all fabulous--they still prepare you better for a marathon than any other workout. For me perosnally it isn't just about building the endurance to run that far but rather about the mental endurance. The more long runs I put in the less daunting the full 26 feels for me.
Anyway, all that said--if you feel you can tackle the 18 I would do that as I think the 18 and 20 are more important runs and the 16 is just your stepping stone to them. Also I think that after that 20 do another 18 instead of a 16. Also, how long is your taper? If it is 3 weeks you might be able to get away with 2 weeks and tack another longish run on. I only taper for 2-2 1/2 weeks. But then again, as you probably know, I am definitely not one to follow on the taper.
Thanks a lot for your help, Nat! I know I shouldn't follow your taper advice too closely! especially when you are 100% healthy!!
I think I would skip the 16 miler but try to sneak in one or a couple of longer (10+) runs this week if you can do it without pain. Then, since you've already done 14, you can go to 18 this week.
However, having said this - maybe right now is not the time to be trying to squeeze miles out of your shoes. New shoes might be better?
Hey Wes!
Sorry to take so long to catch up with you - been sick and busy. First, Congrats on the bling! Second, I see most people recommended skipping the 16, but I'm more inclined to say you shouldn't skip the long run...Maybe instead of 5, do 10.
I just think jumping to 18 seems like a big jump. You're pretty hard core though, maybe that's not so big afterall. =)
OOOOOOhhhh, I LOVE a good milestone. However, if you ever google for a picture, they all look like TOMBSTONES. Not a good thing. Hope you figure out the tire dilemma. :P
The tires will be well worth the money. They are awesome! Hope you figure out the problem though. How frustrating!
Jodi
I vote for skipping your 16 and try for anything over 17 this week. Your main goal is to increase your mileage and you are, so don't sweat it, just get the rest of your long runs in. Nice job saving all the money too!
Wes,
This sounds like more than just a tube, although I hope it is because of price. I think it might be a bearing, you could of crushed one. So a hub works an axel, cups and cones and ball bearings, the fix would be to pull the cone off and replace the ball bearings repack with grease and reassemble, this should take about an hour tops so the price should not be too high.
As far as the missed miles, I would add 2-4 to your Thursday run, or run twice tomorrow, yeah, run twice once in the AM and once in the PM , and do your 18 miler as scheduled.
-Brian
Congrats on your milestone :)
Boo! about your bike
No idea about your run (but impressed)
If you are feeling good, I would side on replacing the 5 with something between 10 and 12 this weekend. For a first-time marathon, you are really trying to get "time on feet" with your running. As long as you keep the intensity low on your long runs, you shouldn't have trouble with the mileage plan you are following. The biggest mistake marathoners tend to do is not do too much mileage, but do too much mileage at a fast or race pace. That's why you see ultra runners who run 200 mile weeks but don't get hurt but there are marathoners getting hurt all the times. It's because ultramarathoners don't do hardly any fast running. So I wouldn't fear doing a little more mileage this weekend. Just be sure to keep the intensity low and listen to your body.
Run on, dude!
Skip the 16 long run. If you miss a workout, you miss and move on. Otherwise, trying to fit the mileage in is usually a pain in the booty AS well as gives you a higher risk of injury.

DITTO I was always told dont try to make up past workouts ...just move on !
I agree with everyone who said "skip it."
no clue on what is wrong with the wheels/tires/tube or whatever. But new tires can't be a bad thing. ;p
Take my advice with a HUGE grain of salt, but I'd just skip that run and move on.
My advice is skip the 16 do the 5 and then the 18. If you push it all back a week, you'll end up losing some valuable taper time.
And that majorly stinks about the bike tires!
Wes, first congrats on the mileage milestone, woot!
About the long runs, my first question would be are you planning any more 20 or 20+ milers after the last 16 miler. I think you've got time for another one. The 20 on the 10/27 is still 6 weeks out. I think for this weekend I'd suggest something more than 5 but less than the 16 you missed, maybe 10-12 and then proceed with your schedule as planned.
