Have you ever heard somebody say something and think, "Yea, that sounds right, but I don't know it for myself." Or, you might even think, well, that sounds kinda dumb and I won't believe it until I see it....
What a busy weekend I had. Dee Dee came back into town after visiting with her family Thursday night. We had just enough time to hug and kiss each other before she was off to Raleigh with my oldest son for his soccer tournament. That left me and Matthew at home by ourselves all weekend.
Matthew had a local tournament in which to play. I was hoping to get my long run in Sunday, but I kind of suspected that Matthew would make it to the finals, and if he did, my long run might be in jeopardy. Matthew's team had a great tournament, and not only did they make it to the finals, they won! This was a first for Matthew and his team. I was really excited for him.
Sunday afternoon, I got home from the tournament just in time to get ready to referee some adult games. I know I said I was done for the season, but I am sucker for people that ask for help (as if you guys didn't know that already). The assignor called me and needed help. There were so many tournaments this past weekend. Referees were scarce. I thought to myself, no problem. I can run real hard during the adult games and I will make up for missing my long run. Yea, right. The first game was canceled. The second game was such a one-sided affair, I basically stood in one teams defending half for the whole game and got like zero running in. I was very disappointed. Disappointed enough in fact to consider moving to a different league next year.
Monday rolls around and family life is returning to some semblance of (chaotic) normalcy. Jimmy had his first JV basketball game. I left work early to watch him basically sit on the bench the whole game. Can you see I'm plodding along here :-) On the way back from Jimmy's game, Matthew asked me if I was going to ride my bike when we got home. He wanted to go with me. It was very cold. Matthew and I dressed warmly and headed out on our bikes. I gave Matthew the option of choosing the five or six mile route when we got to the end of the subdivision. Matthew chose the five mile route, suprise, suprise, and we made good time and did excellent on the hills. After dropping him off at home, I did the one mile loop around the house to get in my extra fifth mile. It was during this ride that I learned a valuable lesson. A while back, on a TMI Tuesday, one of the questions had mentioned, "What would you do with 100 bucks?" I think it was Ms. Jodi that said she would like a pair of bike gloves with fingers! I now second the motion! My poor little digits just about fell off for the first fifteen minutes of my ride. Next time, I ditch the bike gloves and wear my warm referee gloves. That Jodi sure is a smart girl :-)
It's the little things, people!
Finish strong!

I've found that wearing some well-breathing thin running gloves beneath my fingerless bike gloves work on days such as that. You still get the padding and manage some semblance of warmth.
Wow, you're a busy man. I admire all of you athletes who train in the cold weather. I am spoiled on Southern California sunshine. It hit the mid-60s one morning and everyone in my training group was talking about buying gloves. I know, we're such wimps....BTW, thanks for your last post on my blog about the walking breaks. I'm definitely taking them now-- early and often!
I told you to wear your field gloves it was cold out!!! Ha ha Im such a smart ass!!!!!:)
Thanks for the comment Wes - I actually had my 'don't kid yourself' "aha" moment reading your post about drinking! On the same day I read Roman's post about the #1 way to get a PB (lose some weight) - and the penny FINALLY dropped. LOL it's ONly taken me (mumble) years :)
Too bad about missing your long run, you seem to have bounced back pretty good though.
Your week sounds like mine have been lately. I'm very thankful for the holiday weekend we have coming up. I hope you get to enjoy a little breather, too!
I know what it's like to be so busy. Sounds like you had a good ride though.
Nice job. But you are SO busy!
Soccer tournament champs... how can I not leave a comment?!?!? Congratulations to Matthew, winning a tourney is never easy but it's such a huge deal! :)
Warm hands and comfortable footwear, that is what it's about:-)
