Trying to be true to form, I am permeating my blog with my Southern accent. What Southern accent you ask? Well, I ask myself that same question. Oh, I can recognize an accent when I meet people from Minnesota and New York. But on one of my few visits to California, I was told by several people that I have a "lovely" Southern accent. I'm like, "What accent?" :-) I certainly didn't recognize an accent from the lovely people in T.V. land. Oh well, I digress...
Dee Dee and I received a flyer in the mail, and we are now officially doing the "Hot Lips Hustle 5K" instead of the "Run for Research 5K" on September 16th. This particular run benefits children with cleft palettes. It is much closer to home, thus maximizing the probability that it won't interfere with soccer, and finally, the description describes the route as "very flat". I mean, come on folks! How can you argue with a description like that?
Now for the potentially exciting part. I was already aware that Atlanta has a tri club. So, I'm surfing their web site and I saw they were advertising a half-marathon in November. I thought to myself, "Cool! I can do that!" This lead me to active.com, and I saw all the wonderful races they had there. One in particular caught my eye, "The Silver Comet Trail Half-Marathon". The organizers of this race say that if you can walk 17 minute miles, then this race is the one for you! I'm psyched! I think I can do this. Given that I am a brand new runner, and that I have a 5K in September, do you think I can handle it? I value all my blogger friends opinions, so lemme know.
I listened to a very inspirational message from Iron Wil over at Through Th3 Wall. Wil puts out a podcast called, "Get Your Geek On (GYGO)". Seems a man in New York was inspired by Wil, and he lost 70 pounds (240 to 170) by running. Yea, Baby! I'm all over that!
Alrighty then, I'm off to plan a six mile route for tomorrow. For now, my long run will have to remain on Tuesdays...
Finish strong!

Something I can definitely relate to! I did a half marathon in April. No training (my longest run was about 5 miles at that point in the season). Result: I had a great run. BUT- Pushed it too hard. Injured myself. Took 4 weeks to heal.
I would say do this:
increase your "long run" by 0.5 miles per week. If you can get up to 10-12 miles by race time I say go for it. If you can't get there and want to do the race, just run the distance of your longest run and then walk it in.
Great motivation! And join a tri-club. They rock!
Woo hoo!! You go Wes! We'll make a triathlete out of you yet! Get that bike down from the garage and get'a spinnin'! Next you just need to find a lake... :)
That's the best thing about Triathlon training - you never get bored in your exercise as there's so much to do! And swimming is the perfect recovery exercise and biking is pretty easy on the ole joints as well. So have fun!!

I agree with Jodi about the training. I would recommend getting up to at least 10 miles before a half. That doesn't give you a ton of time, so there's more of a chance of injury - so listen to your body. Remember, you do not need to rush into getting up to a half. You'll have plenty of opportunities. My opinion - Wait! The more time you have to build up mileage, the better it is on your body. The worst thing we runners do is try to go too far (or too fast) too soon. Then we're sidelined and grouchy! :)
Go for it, just remember to walk when you need to, you seem like the type of man that can do that, you know listen to your own body. Running is such a great sport, but I am with you on the tri, next summer, I am doing it baby!
Of course you can do it. Just take it slow and enjoy the ride--er run!!
How could you not run the Hot Lips Hustle, the name alone is great and a worthwhile cause to boot.
About the half, I'd be inclined to try it. Just remember to take it easy. What's your longest run so far? You've got a little over 2 months, will you be able to get your long runs close to 12 miles before then? If this isn't the one, just know that there are plenty more out there. Eventually you'll pick a goal race and nothing will stop you from getting there.
I hear your half marathon envy, I have it too! My goal, maybe in 2008, is the Disney World Half. I believe I could walk it this year if I had to (it filled up, actually, so the point is moot, but for argument's sake...), but I would like to try running more than walking, espec. since I am digging this run/walk thing.
Where am I going with this. Me? I would wait on the half. But LOVE the name and the cause of the Hot Lips 5K, can't go wrong with "very flat course," right? GL GL
If you can do a long run of 10 miles then you can do a 1/2 marathon. If you are ok with walking portions of it, then you should be fine. 2 months is enough time. Keep in mind, for the longer distances, you need to decrease your pace to be able to get through it. It takes a little more patience than a 5K. You can do it!
